After, before, during. Thanks @anniehyde57 for always being my greatest motivator to get shit DONE. This corner has been driving me mad for months now, but I didn't have the right piece of furniture to fix it. Finally found a good solution, spent 2ish hours putting it together, and now have a clean, organized entryway. 🙌🏻🙏🏻

This is what I painted while recovering from jaw surgery. "Talk," a piece about having to keep my thoughts to myself for a couple of weeks. A forced mindfulness, if you will. 30x40" Mixed Media on Arches watercolor paper. $975. DM if interested.

"Unsettled Territory"

"Need a Little Time Lapse" is still a work in progress, but I've paused on it for now. My whole plan was to create this underpainting for the squiggly line overlay, but I haven't been able to bring myself to do it! I think I like it exactly how it is.

I spent over an hour tonight trying to upload a time lapse of me playing in Procreate with this underpainting. The first 3 pics are just digital drawings on top of an image of the underpainting (4th pic). I set out to paint this with the intention of covering her up with the wide squiggly lines, but now I'm struggling to commit to that. When to finish a piece is so daunting! But for now, at least I can play in tech land and see how it may come out. Stay tuned...

Went to the farmers market today, and then decided to "quickly" pop into @cecysgallery. I noticed one of the pop-up shops had a new artist in it, and was instantly drawn to the work. Inside, I met a lovely woman named Cecilia of @cecilia_kalish_art, who moved to Durham at the beginning of covid, not long after I did. I loved the architectural line work in her abstract paintings, which contain a lot of collage elements too. I've been actively seeking to support more local artists, so I was scouring her collection in search of the piece that spoke to me the most. Then, I saw this one. I hadn't seen it in the time I'd been in the studio, but as soon as I did, I zoomed in on it. "Tell me about this piece," I said, and Cecelia proceeded to tell me a story of religious trauma from a Catholic upbringing, not unlike my own experience. It told me the piece was meant for me. "Does it have a name?" I asked. She hemmed and hawed a bit, until she said, "no, but it always reminded me of the song Rapture, by Blondie." And the giggle that brought to me just sealed the deal. So lovely to meet you, Cecilia! Thank you for adorning my home with a story that - to me - symbolizes healing.

Finished this piece and forgot to share it! This piece was my entrypoint into using these wide, flowing lines. I thought the painting was lost, actually. I was starting to hate the direction I had taken the underpainting, but then I felt the need for some contrast. In adding the dark blue lines, I learned the contrast and the layers were all that it needed. It became meditative and the intricacy of the underpainting became calmed by the top layer. So many metaphors to my current life exist in this painting, and I'm now obsessed with getting lost in these lines. What do you think?

Today versus a few days ago... Still not sure if this is finished, but I went from really feeling like it was unsalvageabley discordant to absolutely loving how the dark foreground contrasts with the underpainting. What do you think?

I got to hand-deliver "Sour Candy" today! Thank you, Melissa, for being a long time supporter of me and my art. Taking my work to its rightful owner and home is something that gives me the greatest joy! Can't wait to see this piece on the wall!

I got to deliver these two paintings to the lovely @meghanhaviland. So grateful they're going to their rightful home! It feels so good to adorn my friends' walls with my art. 🙏🏻

Work in progress! I'm really excited about how this piece is coming along.

I played with paint a little last night! Hadn't touched it in weeks, but between my art show last weekend and reading The Artist's Way with friends, I felt inspired. I'm using gouache, watercolor, colored pencils, and oil pastels on Arches watercolor paper. Something tells me this piece is going to change a LOT over time, so this is just early progress.

Got to climb outside with some amazing friends this weekend!! I'm so grateful for this community I'm a part of, and for the mentors who have taken me to see some of the country's most beautiful landscapes. Outside is becoming my happy place more and more with every trip!

Covid update: I'm only on day 3 and I feel like I'm already on the mend. Hopefully that's not a trick that covid plays, because I've been feeling creatively inspired too. Being quarantined again, even though for a very short time, makes me wonder how we all did it. And I'm grateful for the health and vaccines that afforded me time and energy to pursue creative hobbies under my own roof while we all waited things out.

Lots of thoughts here... I'm painting again, and getting really pumped about my upcoming art show! I'm also Being reminded that the more time I spend around creatives, the more I long to create. So thanks to all the babes in my life who inspire me to create, most recently @planet_bren and @meghanhaviland, who took me to Asheville and the recent @sharonvanhalen and @angelolsenmusic show, followed by @ironandwinetour with Andrew Byrd. Seeing 4 of my favorite artists, with artists, all in one weekend really got my creative juices flowing.

The view from the top is always worth every ounce of struggle or doubt that it took to get there.

Nerd alert! I did my first hive inspection today, with success. I moved the bees from a smaller box to a home with more frames. I couldn't find the queens, but I saw lots of larvae and eggs, which means she's not far! I was also able to get the smoker going without too much trouble, but the bees didn't love that. They were super calm until I showed up with smoke. 😅 Anyway, that's why I bought a bee suit. I'm actually allergic to bees, so I'm trying to be as careful as I can beeeee! More pics to come, as I do more inspections.

At long last, I have bees again! It's been almost 3 years since I took my beekeeping course and shared hives with my friend. Now I have hives of my own again!

I've been wanting to work at a larger scale for a while now, but I still haven't figured out a decent setup for doing that in my small space. Shown are two pieces that I'm _pretty_ sure are done. The first is about 5x4' and the second is 3x4'. Both of these are experimental, where I was mostly concerned with learning how to use different types of materials together. I need room to spread out, though! Anyone have ideas for how to work large in a small space? And anyone want to teach me how to stretch a canvas well? The second painting was my first stretch, but it's already warped. Womp womp. Regardless, fun times have been had making art on my day off!

New ink, by the incredible @emilypageart !! I'm so in love with my okra plant. It's a symbol of my love of gardening, growing up in the south, and a subtle tribute to my mom @anniehyde57 (because she loves okra, and she got my first harvest, annnnd she's my hero!). Thank you, Emily, for bringing my idea to life! I so enjoyed my experience at your shop, and loved getting to relate to you as a fellow artist. Looking forward to getting my next piece by you!

"Lost"

Spatial Awareness

I got to go rock climbing outside today!

Sometimes you just rip a giant piece of canvas off the roll, and drizzle it with house paint and sponged lines because that's what you've got to work with in regards to both materials and energy level. Yet it felt oddly good to have to work and move my body to paint across this size surface, and I'd like to do it again with a few more colors to choose from, and maybe some fun tools/mediums for creating texture and movement. This scale calls to me, and I doubt this playful thing can be called done, so I'll post it again in color when it can!

Post-vacation puppy digest. I missed these two just a little bit! 😆
